Are you wondering what is VPN and how does it work? You might have heard of this notion already, but how can it help you and your business? These are all questions that many of us have and here is the answer to both of them!
What is a VPN?
A VPN is a virtual private network that works within a specific set of computers and it can help you stay safe against the prying eyes that can be found online. The VPN will protect your computer pretty much like a firewall, although it does that in the online world. Even if the VPN is basically a WAN, it does retain the similar appearance, functionality and security that a private network has.
Why use VPN?
The reason is simple; using a VPN will keep your data anonymous. You won’t be identifiable in the online world and that is great if you want to avoid exposure. It’s a great way to browse safely without fearing hackers and it will also maintain your anonymity if you want to avoid your exposure when you use secret or confidential content.
How can you use a VPN and how does it work?
The first thing you have to do is to connect to the web with your internet service provider. Once that is done, you have to use a dedicated VPN client software. There are many solutions you can use here, some of which are free and others are paid. You can try to use both of them and harness their benefits as you see fit.
Each VPN connection comes with its own set of protocols that you can customize upon creating it. IPSec is suitable for securing communications and the transport mode will encrypt the data package message whereas the Tunneling mode will encrypt everything.
Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP)/IPsec on the other hand is a connection type focused on security. It’s a combination of tunnel generation and encryption that helps protect your data. SSL and TLS are connections used by online companies.
No matter what type of VPN connection you use, the process is pretty much the same. When you connect to the client you will be able to choose one of the connection types and the desired VPN server that the VPN company offers. These can be in the same country but other city or in another country.
The computer will send data to that server and from there the data will be transferred to the target site. Of course, it will work the other way around as well. This means that the target site will see the location of that VPN server as your own location. Basically, the VPN server will actively mask your location not letting any site know where you are visiting from.
You can modify the location as you see fit and use a variety of servers from all over the globe. Of course, the internet browsing experience will vary based on that but it will offer you a great insight into the value that you can obtain this way!
In terms of your privacy concerns; using VPN will definitely keep you safer on the internet than not using it. Personally i’ve being using VPN for years now and i’m quite very happy with the experience so far!
But the big question is this; how do you find the best VPN service provider?
